Oh the Avocado!

Avocados are good for you because the have good fat, right?

This amazing nutrient dense fruit (actually a single-seeded berry) has more potassium than a banana, it’s one of the few high protein fruits (4 grams), they can be used as an alternative to butter in baking and are even good for your hair and skin.  These are the simple things an avocado can do for you, let’s get a little deeper into this beloved fruit.

Yes 1 cup of an avocado has 22 grams of fat but 15 of those grams are monounsaturated, this puts it in the same category as Olive Oil.

The avocado provides us with a special group of fats known as phytosterols – beta-sitosteral, campesterol & stigmasterol).  Did I loose you?  Just wait, this special group of fats has anti-inflammatory benefits for the body system including the heart.  Studies have shown adding avocado to your well balance diet can improve L
​HDL Cholesterol levels (the good one).

Not only does the avocado on it’s own provide benefits, it also makes the “Best Food” list even better.  Sweet potatoes, carrots, leafy greens & tomatoes for example are low it fat and high in carotenoids.  Stay with me, carotenoids are a group of A Vitamins that boost your immune system, fight against free radicals in your body that cause serious diseases an another added benefit of the carotenoids is healthy skin and bones. Aaahh yes the avocado.

Next time you make a salad, roast your carrots or make tomato sauce add a little of this special fruit and know you are being extra kind to yourself!!
